Eurotrashed...

1st Eurotrash flyer! new one on the way

Aloha yʻall

Saturday, June 25, 2011 at midnite was the debut of "Eurotrash" at Lotus Downtown, 34 N.Hotel Street in Honolulu, HI.  Eurotrash has many definitions in the urban dictionary and they are all applicable. This going to be a monthly at Lotus Downtown we are redefining Eurotrash as "sex, art and dance music" or SEXED HAUTE MUSIQUE. Danse the nite away on the fourth Saturdays of the month while being entertained by the artists & performers. We want to moog ya baby! *air kisses*

"Get Lit" a concept by Mick Motor also debuted at the Kanoa Bristol, Shadowfaxx, B-Day edition of "Eurotrash" last nite . "Get Lit"- in the hands of a pro, then camera hand off to other party people for the ultimate documented-in-this-case-club-experience. There will be photos of all yʻall, by yʻall that showed up to this event last nite. We are in the works for the next fourth Saturday in July which is July 22, 2011. Stay tuned and thanks to all who signed up to be on the mailing list for first dibs on whats next with "Eurotrash"! We want to moog ya, baby! Peep it!

this one is for the broken hearted...

Aloha y'all

This is the broken hearted edition. Things don't always work out even with hard work. This is to ALL the ideas, events, models, cancelled photo shoots, etc. that did not make it. Everything, I heard, works out for a reason, but today is to acknowlege those ideas, ideals, people that will not. Sad face indeed.

Ghost writer! Take it away...

My Fave SA

McFlaps Urban Education-Intro 101

Aloha fellow readers of STARLA WAS HERE. I would like to introduce myself as B. McFlaps. I am an active artist both on and off the streets of Honolulu. Many thanks to Starla Biz for this opportunity to express and discuss street ART and its many incarnations.

Art is an effective tool of expression that can break down barriers and reconcile differences. Art has had an influence on man ever since we found it etched in prehistoric caves. Here in Hawaii, it was petroglyphs that furnished the islands. These are examples of the earliest form of visual communication and social media.

From cave walls to Facebook walls, as technology expands, so do our social circles. As everything becomes "tagged", "liked", "shared", and a "favorite", we have the ability to instantly express ourselves in larger circles, making the world a smaller place.

My desire is to discuss and explore forms of expression that some might overlook or dismiss. There are those of us expressing ourselves in the world all around us. We speak to you from the street signs, lamps, poles, electric boxes and alley walls. Look up or down and all around hidden or hanging from telephone wires down to the ground you walk on, we are there. Some call it vandalism, some graffiti, some street ART. What do you think?

Expression is ART!

"Free Ai Weiwei" on Next Door 43 N. Hotel Street in Honolulu, HI

Aloha yʻall

Have you seen the "Free Ai Weiwei" art piece on the wall outside of Nextdoor a Cinema /Lounge on Hotel Street in C-town (Chinatown) Honolulu, HI? Ai Weiwei is an international artist from China, a few of my favorite exhibitions include: in 2010 "Sunflower Seeds" one hundred million porcelain seeds at the TATE MODERN in London, in 2007"THE FOUNTAIN OF LIGHT" a beautiful "light" installation and 1994ʻs, "WHITEWASH AND STILL LIFE" cave man urns with the Coca-cola logo attached! Click on Ai Weiwei to find out why he needs to be freed.

Expression in this case is the art! Ai Weiwei is an activist as well as artist and has been outspoken against some of his countries practices. This is extremely notable since his country, China is communist. I believe, in art there is truth expressed either consciously or subconsciously, the ones that make you go hmmm. I hope that this situation works out and want to see more work from this artist.

I found great info. while researching for this blog post, check out kickstarter.com. This is a great site and Alison Klayman the documentary film maker gave me permission to show vid-e-o here. Mahaloz.

I have some definite opinions on the entire matter, check out "Ode" below.

Art is expression

Do these look like the faces of criminals? read on...
Aloha yʻall

Dictionary.com defines expression in many ways, I think the most applicable is " act or an instance of transforming ideas into words" and/or "communication of emotion through music, painting etc." Is this applicable to "Is StreetART a crime, heck yes! If you are a good SA your work has been seen and it changes and challenges and/or amuses. I believe to be a good artist (street or in general) there has to be truth in the artistʻs work expressed either consciously or unconsciously, the oneʻs that make you go hmmm...

In Street ART vandalism is a crime AND this is a problem for some. From the SA side this is a rite of passage and/or you are coming up, street artists can be arrested if caught. In the above definition for vandalism, there is Banksy, the most recognized SA worldwide, his WORK that is. "Is street ART a crime?" I have tossed and turned on this one a lot since the venue change for BIRDS IN THE CITY. I donʻt like the criminal aspect applied to this art form so I/we are trying to remove the crime ALL with out losing too much STREET CRED.

I think "expression" in all itʻs defined forms is a good thing especially if no one is harmed in the process. Have you seen B3@k03 and Botherʻs work? I am blown away and really lucky to have their work via Flickr. I see dedication, progression, and expression and thats what I want to focus on. Street ART is here and I L.O.V.E. it when the SAʻs EXPRESS themselves.

This is a three part series look out for "Expression is art" then a final word from a ghost writer. Peep it!

Aloha yʻall

What is there to NOT like about Robots! I enjoy their dance, bleeps, blips and robo-voices and did you know grey is a classic go-to color? at least in the world of STARLA BIZ. I have only seen the work of this Street artist in passing his characters are ROBOTS! and he wants us to "watch out 4 robots". I only know the work so Iʻm just posting what I have seen first hand while walking around. Add me to your fan list mysterious SA and Keep it up!

To continue with this Robot theme I have a favorite record label, "my favorite robot records" outta T.O(Toronto,ON, Canada) I ASKED for permission and GOT IT to post these videos and write about my love for this Canadian label. (I also heart Canadians) I have "Modest Goddess(Pan/Tone remix)video first cuz thats what I like the most to boogie oogie on down to. This video is not an official video release from the record label.  Next one up is Jonny White featuring my favorite robot-Desensitize(Chloe Remix) this one has a photosensitive warning on it so proceed with watching caution if that applies to you. Listening to my favorite robot records and "watching out 4 robots"...my life is complete.

I donʻt steal pics of the Grouch and Zumbi, Zion I crew

Aloha yʻall

I donʻt know if you know this but I am not computer savvy, I started this blog with .05 skills in that department. I am researching and trying to improve. Again I find this blogger format , for lack of a better word too blocky. I would like to have a different photo background for each blog posting but this site will not allow me. For right now I like Annabelle Jordan Close as the wallpaper, itʻs a BIG HEART to Japan, done the Starla Biz way, shot through the MICK MOTOR lens. I am proud to say in the battle of Starla vs. Technology  I started out at 1, now Iʻm at 2, vs...1000. Slow nʻ Steady, yes?

So I donʻt steal photoʻs off sites like Dosomethingtonight because I give credit where it is due AND I donʻt (know) how to steal. I am honest even if itʻs embarrassing. Check out the Grouch and Zion I (sorry Zumbi, I linked you guys) in NEW photo galleries at Dosomethingtonight as well as other photos. I accompanied Ana of La Cutie Fotoʻs and DST on this venture at closing time at Next Door, Wed. nite to document this night. I had some artwork from the art/fashion event BIRDS IN THE CITY so I had everyone I could pose with the thought bubbles. They were done up by my fave SA and I think he is THE BEST! Enjoy! "Flappinʻ up!" my fave SA

Your first time...

Aloha yʻall

Itʻs the season of new beginnings or as I like to say "itʻs my first time". I am a first-time blogger and I had NO idea how much this blog would consume me. I am having fun:friends, photographers, strangers, mysterious Street ARTists, unknown to me record label people, etc. have been giving me subject matter. Thats what this "STARLA IS HERE" is all about, it is a Fashion, Music, Lifestyle blog. This is a creative vehicle to express fun, style and attitude.

Okay, so BIRDS IN THE CITY was on May 20, 2011, like two weeks ago. The slideshow photoʻs are from the Mahaloz party for B.I.T.C. by ANT and itʻs his first-time! ANT aka Anthony Akana is a camera junkie, he knows ALOT and generally sides with the analogue side of things. I am a LOMO girl because of him, Lomography cameraʻs check it out. I would be working on my handbags and Anthony would be talking about photography, mainly the technical side. What a fun roommate! I have given him all-access to my work, B.I.T.C, he has seen it happen from the very first inkling to now. I am anxiously waiting for him to develop a lot of photoʻs he has taken on different cameraʻs, like the Holga. This was shot on a digital camera, a Sony, but we all like to expand our "horizons" here at the house. Enjoy.

BOTHER

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aukinestuff

Aloha yʻall

I am super excited and I am ALL about BOTHER! He is the first artist in "Is Street ART a crime?" "Is Street ART a crime?" has to take the artists off the streets. The mission, to focus on the ART and heart of the street ARTist so you can see what I see, DOPENESS! There is a sometime crime aspect attached to street ART and although that is a necessary part of this art form WE (the artists and yours truly) are here to focus on the ART. The reason why we are approaching businesses is to have aloha between artist and business owner, artist and artist and artist and law enforcement. There are a lot of players in this street game and its time to create a new vocabulary in the Street ARTist name.

Paul S. of Lotus Downtown at 34N. Hotel Street was the first business here in Honolulu, HI to take us on. The work of Bother and B3@k03 are hanging around on the walls, check them out. Shogunai Tacoʻs the second business to welcome us and has elevated the taco to gourmet heights. This taco truck is all over the island of Oahu, peep us there. This will be in vid-e-o format and we are currently working on it and hope to have it in the hands of Matt Duffy (owner of Shogunai Tacoʻs) in a week. This is a lofty venture wish us luck! "Flap up" my favorite SA.

ALOHA my name is...

Aloha yʻall

L8 start today. I was out in C-town(chinatown) yesterday. It was the MAHALO(thank you) party for BIRDS IN THE CITY last nite at Lotus downtown. Models, Djʻs, Joel S. of Family Dinner, Anthony Akana:a big support system for me, photographers, makeup artists, and the hair stylists came out for a drink on me courtesy of Paul S. I had fun and was grateful for everyone that came out and those that could not make it. I am not from Hawaii but I got L.O.V.E. for this state.

I was out in the day as well yesterday, I work at night so daytime is a novelty. I was walking around C-town doing errands and making sure folks came out for a thank you drink. It seemed everywhere I looked I saw these street ARTists. Yay! There might be people who disapprove but you will not find a h8r here. I L.O.V.E the work, keep it up. This of course is just D-town(downtown) area there are other areas where you can see more. These are cell phone shots I tried to line it up as best I could. I prefer a first time point of view for these street ARTists.
