M.D.

Aloha yʻall

Donʻt let the title fool ya, there are no doctorʻs here, only the doctorʻs of style. It was P.S.D on M.D.:translation-it was Photo Shoot Day on Memorial Day, yay! It was four-ish hours and it was hot. Mick Motor and yours truly decided to shoot sunglasses. We have a lot of ideas, minimal budget and are using our environment, whats around us. I have twelve pairs at our disposal so letʻs shoot ʻem. I think its interesting to show the behind-the-scenes to let you know the work and the love that goes into what we do. Itʻs also a good lead up to the reveal of the photo...

The photo will be released on another day. I hope your Memorial Day was as fun as mine and the Isdesʻs.

boogie oogie

Aloha yʻall

I had a busy weekend and did a couple door shifts at Lotus Downtown. I observed nitelife from the sidewalk and it was very interesting. Paul S. the owner did not play this this weekend but it seemed apropos. " Love come down" Evelyn Champagne King this track makes me want to boogie oogie on down.

P.S.D. & the ladies...

Aloha yʻall

Yesterday May 26, 2011 was a busy day, I rolled out of bed and it was Photo Shoot Day, Yay! at my house. I started off with Vanessa Brandstetter, ten minutes early, this is a talented soon-to-be-Hawaii-certified-Hair-and-Makeup-ARTISTE. Next in Elyssa Xavier, the model, her wardrobe and then MICK MOTOR and his assistant Bill Peters. There was hair, makeup, preparation of four different "looks", three different locations within the house and voila, a photo! The time span from start to finish was four hours. These things take time, effort, negotiation, makeup touch up, hair fixes, flexibility of wardrobe,  and general coaxing of everything in "THE SHOT" to get "THE SHOT". What you think we just do this? There was a team working to get some "SHOTS", more on this l8r.

The photo shoot was done, then I had to meet up with Katherine Rita of b2c jewelry at Art and Flea at Fresh Cafe, 831 Queen Street. I had jewelry on loan for the fashion show part of BIRDS IN THE CITY that happened last Friday, May 20, 2011 at Lotus Downtown. Thank you and XOXO Katherine, there has not been time to meet up between last Friday and now because of our busy schedules. I was impressed by the set up of Art and Flea, yep it was my first time and I looked around indoor, outdoor, upstairs and saw cute stuff, really good prices and a lot of people doing their thang. This was a terrific environment to bask in the glow of creativity and productivity and buy, buy, buy. Katherine Rita, my friend is there along with the rest of ʻem check them out every third Thursday of the month. For more info. check out art and flea fresh cafe online.

Iʻm outside on the makeshift lanai and what do I hear but this track, you know the one above, "Julio Bashmore, Battle for middle you". My head whipped around and I rushed to the KTUH tent and who is playing but Tara Hite, a friend and KTUH Dj, Thursday mornings from 6-9am. I begged her for this track name and I got it and my theme for today, Ladies doing their thing here in Honolulu. There are more than I have listed for sure and guys too. I got to thinking of these specific women, Vanessa Brandstetter, ten minutes early H/S/MA, Elyssa Xavier, model, Katherine Rita, jewelry designer, Tara Hite, Dj & UH student & myself Starla Biz, designer, first-time blogger on fashion, music, and lifestyle:nobody is giving us anything, we TAKING it! I want you to take it. I have sat on the sidelines, now Iʻm in the game, getting dirty and itʻs fun!  Maybe thereʻs something YOU really, really want to do, well...Just Do It and keep on DOING IT! Good luck, best wishes and a lot of hugs.

Aloha yʻall

Rocking threes, what is that all about? B3@k03 references threes in his artwork, Modern Hustle clothing believes in the trinity and I like to rock it like this. I like threes because there is a beginning, middle and end. There is no other reason than that plus I think this photo is HOT! You peeped it here first.

HI!

Aloha yʻall

I donʻt want to be another boring blog site. This is my first time blogging, working on the kinks daily so please bear with the growing pains. :) I would also recommend checking more then once per day, I will be editing throughout the day in these first few months.

I am a smart ass, unfortunately, for those who know me, now Iʻm bringing it to the general public via mock ads. This is the first one, Cookʻs champagne. Drink it or else!

Go to nonstophonolulu  look in nightlife and under the article of E-Joe,  STARLA BIZ BIRDS IN THE CITY. Please allow me to introduce myself my name is Starla Biz.

BIRDS IN THE CITY May 20. 2011, Friday day went something like this. Makeup line Motives makeup by Loren Ridinger cancelled on doing make up for show. I problem solved, purchased makeup, got some make up tips on how to build an eye last minute from makeup artist Michelle Nobriga while getting my own makeup for show done. Then the models ended up doing there own makeup after I had to be everywhere at once. That was so awesome and is a MAJOR HEART from me, this is why MODELS ARE HEROES! Winging it, the show went on and Iʻm grateful for the ladies who made me look good.

The pictures above are of artists work, models, clothing lines and mean mugging from Mick and I. Peep it!

I L.O.V.E. D.O.R.K.!

D.O.R.K. red D1 Jim Di Carlo HQʻs
May 16, 2011

               Aloha yʻall!

I am not a dork, Iʻm a nerd and I L.O.V.E. D.O.R.K. sunglasses! The D.O.R.K. sunglasses are by Jim Di Carlo, who is also B-Ware, a "progressive clothing brand successfully filling the gaps between street, surf and skate culture" with his partner Jonathan Boulware. There is a B-Ware store at 1147 Smith Street next to Otto cakes in C-town, Honolulu, HI. I recently rode out to the North Shore with Jim to pick up the glasses for BIRDS IN THE CITY.

I asked about the location of the store, itʻs definitely on an interesting neighborhood block, in C- Town, Jim replied that he likes the location and the "griminess" is a plus. Here is a tip, if you go to the store and the Be Right Back sign is up look no further than across the street at the pull up bars. Jim DiCarlo is on a "Health is Wealth and Movement in Medicine" kick. From the car ride I learnt that Jim is the creative director, marketing, brand identity half. Partner Jonathan handles the whole sale end, which means more B-Ware in stores across the universe and Jim has chickens! Their B-Ware store has their clothing, D.O.R.K. sunglasses and other designers including a swimwear line. Check out the store in person if you are a Hawaii resident or visitor at the above mentioned location and/or their online store www.bwareville.com.

There are two styles of  D.O.R.K. sunglasses , the D1 and the D2 and they are $20.00 a pair.  D1 is the bigger, chunkier frame available in 10 colors, D2 is the aviator frame available in six colors. These sunglasses are a current favorite of mine and in case you are wondering... I do own a white D1 pair.  Check out D.O.R.K. sunglasses on the models at BIRDS IN THE CITY, May 20 from 7-10pm at Lotus Downtown 34 N. Hotel Street. Peep it!

conscious groove records

May 14, 2011

Who is Conscious Groove Records? And what do they do? Juju Beats is the producer/drummer extraordinaire behind the conscious groove movement, he has worked with the likes of Dr. Dre, Perry Ferrell and Stevie Wonder. His current projects are a monthly live drumming session with a  Dj , live drummer with Dj, nice! on second Fridays at Lotus Downtown.  Also a compilation is due soon of Jujuʻs past work with different artists in the Bay area, L.A and Hawaii. Juju was interested in the youth of Hawaii where he currently lives, Bands Not Gangs! is the long term project, Watch out!

Mike Kratzke is a partner in Conscious Groove Records. He has a film production company (RMS Productions), and has worked with underprivileged youth the infamous Kanoa Park of Kalihi, which is a neighbor to the Mayor Wrights housing project. He also sponsors Kalihi RAIDERS rugby club which promotes kids and adults from different neighborhoods to engage in sports together. The film production company is way to open creative doors in the film industry for the kids. Most importantly however, giving the kids the chance to experience behind as well as in front of the camera helps to boost their self-esteem.

This is an awesome duo and I wanted to help out artist to artist after I found out about the house fire on February 10, 2011. The music studio was in the house and this was also a resource they used to help out the kids of Kalihi and other areas. I wanted to give more info. on the guys in Conscious Groove because they are doing good things.

On the reel check out the guys and their work down in the neighborhoodz. Good job guys!

May 10, 2011

The theme for today is Just Do It! I own a Nike Just Do It shirt but itʻs in the wash. I am ten days away from Birds In The City and there is a lot of things to do. Fitting models, meeting up with clothing companies involved, finishing art piece "for sale" for optional door donation, etc. I will probably have less sleep as May 20, 2011 gets closer and I would have it no other way. This is fun!

Starla is not a cougar!

May 9, 2011

Today is my birthday! not Starla Biz but the designer.

What is a cougar? To be brief:an older woman on the prowl for a younger man. I have been joking about this status for two years now. The reason I am not a cougar? I am not old enough to be one, yet. The Urban Dictionary starts the cougar age at 35 but average is 40 years old and up.I have a couple more birthdays till the inevitable...Whats my age? a lady never tells.

optional door donation to Japan...

May 7, 2011

Aloha yʻall

Please allow me to introduce myself my name is Starla Biz.  March 11, 2011 was a scary day. This video shows the devastation to the country of Japan. All the news that came out in the days following was like something out of a movie, a movie you did not want to be in.

B3@k03 and I were REROCKING handbags, I wanted to find a charity to give to because the handbags were already made and wanted to be karmically cool with the design aspect of "already made". Before the Japan tsunami, a friend of ours house/music studio burnt down. The REROCKED handbags for BIRDS IN THE CITY will go to Conscious Groove Records. The music studio in the house was to help out the keiki of Oahu. The aloha that would have been shown to the youth of Hawaii did not go unnoticed and we wanted to give support to this selfless act.

Japan has had many fundraisers, this is personal because of a good friend that is there. An art piece can be purchased at the door, those proceeds will go to Red Cross Japan. After viewing this video I want to do more...BIRDS IN THE CITY, Slow Art Friday,  May 20, 2011 from 7pm to 10pm. Lotus Downtown. 34 N. Hotel Street. Honolulu, HI.

The Afterparty!

Is Street ART a crime?

 May 7, 2011

Aloha yʻall

I have had an interesting couple of months, and it had to do with BIRDS IN THE CITY! There was a venue change and it worked out better, I hope! What is Street Art? Post graffiti is a good way to start to explain what it is. Its newer then the graffiti I grew up with. Walls were done up and the trains, dope! Post graffiti can be stencils, stickers, characters, etc... The expression is creative and the viewer feels the find. I heart STREETART. Then I found a DOPE street artist who became a friend, collaborator, co-conspirator. I don't want to peep up for him but my creativeness is on high when we work together. :)

Vandalism, de-facing of public property, this is all some people see. Remember BIRDS IN THE CITY! well I was working with my peep on some handbags. And then his "streetwork" was highlighted and not in a good way. The venue change happened because I believe in the ART in Street ART. This is how Is StreetART a crime? was born. It was something I tossed and turned on one night. I think my friend is dope, I think his streetart is KILLER!!! Way beyond!!! etc. I get excited when I view it and I want to view it. Those that know me know I joke about "the man" a lot, well "the man" does not look at this at all. Vandalism is a crime but if thats all you see then you are missing out on ALOT!

Is streetART a crime? Is here to focus on the ART and the heart of the street artist. I have to take the artist off the street for now, so you can see what I see. DOPENESS! This has been done with commissioned walls before but that takes away the edge, and the edge is fun! Is streetART a crime? is looking for as an example:sidewalks, bathrooms, a couple random tiles, signs, and a wall would be nice. Of course this is on private property to build aloha between artist and artist, artist and business owner, artist and law enforce ment. Change is good and we want to keep things fresh so we will be changing monthly. The first piece will be unveiled at BIRDS IN THE CITY, May 20, 2011 from 7pm to 10pm at Lotus Downtown, 34 N. HOTEL STREET, Honolulu, HI. This is a fashion/art event and we donʻt take ourselves seriously at all, attitude and style will be present.

Shogunai Tacos is the second bizness to take us on. This will be on the vid-e-o screen, and that truck is all over Oahu. Shogunai Tacos has elevated the taco to gourmet heights. YUM! We are hoping to have a vid-e-o up a week after BIRDS IN THE CITY.  I am on the lookout for some new businesses to join this venture, if interested email me at starlabizyall@gmail.com.

StreetART has arrived on the island(s). This is an exciting time at the beginning. All I want is for you to see what I see. Wish us luck! this is lofty. Is streetART a crime? is here.

Starla Biz and the dopest peep she knows xoxo
